Who can subscribe to the Belnet R&E Federation?
Two types of organizations can join the Belnet R&E Federation:
- Belgian R&E organizations connected to the Belnet network can join as identity providers (IdPs), and also as service providers (SPs) if they have a web site/application to share with the community.
- Other organizations that want to provide a service to the Belgian R&E community can join as service providers.
Identity Provider or Service Provider?
- Service Provider (SP)
A party that is offering a service to the end users. This could be a website with scientific information or a download service offering software at student reduction.
Any 'online resource' could fit this description. The SP will be using information released by the identity provider in order to provide the service.
- Identity Provider (IdP)
A party responsible for maintaining identity information about its users. The IdP is responsible for all user administration.
This role is taken by all universities and colleges in the Belnet R&E Federation.
How can I join the Belnet R&E Federation?
- Contact our Belnet Service Desk via servicedesk@belnet.be (don’t forget your acronym if you are already a customer). The Service Desk will put you in contact with our Customer Relations Team.
- The Account Manager will send you the technical policy and ask you to sign an agreement. If you agree, you will have to send 2 completed and signed copies of the agreement to: Belnet Customer Relations Team, WTC III, Boulevard Simon Bolivar, 30, 1000 Brussels.
- We will return you the contract back once it is signed by Belnet.
- Your technical contact people will gain access to the metadata management system. Use this tool to submit the metadata from your IdP or SP installation. You will have to install the IdP or SP software on your own systems. Belnet will not do this for you. Don't forget to have a look at the required modifications for eduGAIN here.
- Once accepted by Belnet administrators, your IdP/SP will show up in the federation metadata and everything will be in place.

The Belnet R&E Federation is free-of-charge to users.

How do I cancel the service?
Both parties can cancel the agreement at any time, subject to at least three months’ notice, which is served to the other party by means of a registered letter. The period of notice commences on the first day of the month following the month in which the registered letter was sent (cf: Art.10 of the federation policy).
