As of June 1, Belnet will be hosting eduVPN. eduVPN offers secure access to protected services when accessing from outside your institution's network.

Many public Wi-Fi networks in libraries, bars or on trains are insecure, but even your home network is not always protected properly. All the data you enter and receive on your phone, tablet or computer, can be captured relatively easily by malicious people.

That’s where eduVPN can help by setting up a so-called Virtual Private Network (VPN), an encrypted connection between your computer or smartphone and the network of your organisation.

eduVPN can replace your current, more expensive commercial VPN and because there is no license cost involved, it might allow you to give students access to shared storage, applications, etc in your institute at a low cost. It can of course also be used as such for home workers.

GÉANT started the eduVPN project in 2015. Currently more than 100 organisations worldwide use eduVPN.

eduVPN comes with various benefits

  • Secure

All the traffic to your institute is encrypted when using eduVPN. That is particularly useful when you are using insecure networks, e.g. public Wi-Fi hot spots.

  • Easy to manage

As the solution is hosted by Belnet you don’t need to worry about any hardware or maintenance costs. eduVPN also integrates easily with different identity management systems like LDAP, SAML ,… The admin portal allows you to manage user profiles, e.g. granting only access to privileged systems, to the entire internal network.

  • User-friendly

There are mobile client apps available for Windows, iOS, Android, MacOS and Linux.

  • Cheaper

Your organisation pays a modest contribution based on the number of end-users.
