There is no doubt that the international quantum race is in full swing. China and the United States are investing billions in quantum technology, and the United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Also in Belgium, there are several initiatives that aim to stimulate the development of quantum technology.

For example, Belnet is part of the BeQCI consortium, which consists of academic institutions, private companies and government organizations and aims to set up a testbed for quantum secure communications in Belgium so that private and government institutions can gain practical experience with this new technology.

Panel discussion

On November 14, the Quantum Circle community organized a first Belgian Quantum Circle Summit, bringing together Belgian and European stakeholders from quantum computing, communication and sensing at the Sparks Meeting Center in Brussels. The Quantum Circle community aims to be a catalyst for research and development, as well as for the creation and implementation of quantum-driven applications and services to benefit the economy and society.

Dirk Haex, general manager of Belnet, participated in the panel discussion on the Belgian quantum landscape together with representatives of Beltug, Imec, BOSA and BIPT. Among other things, he explained the role Belnet is playing in the BeQCI project and proudly announced that the first cross-border quantum connection with Luxembourg was delivered that same day.

Use cases

The Quantum Circle Summit stressed the importance of getting started with quantum now to be ready for your organization to not only reap the benefits, but also protect against the dangers that quantum computing will bring. There is still room within the BeQCI project for additional use cases around ultra-secure data transfer.

Do you have a use case you would like to discuss with us?
