To help educational institutions during this COVID-19 period, the European research network GÉANT together with several project partners launched the “OpenUp2U” remote learning platform.

As one of the European national research and education networks (NRENs) that are part of the GÉANT network, Belnet would like to inform you about this initiative.

The services offered support your college or university to facilitate continued learning during the COVID-19 pandemic so that teachers and students can collaborate in real time.

Of what consists the OpenUp2U platform?

The Up2U platform is a Next Generation Digital Learning Environment that is modular and highly customisable.

The platform is based on open source technology and has been developed by European not-for-profit organisations and research institutions such as CERN.

These services include:

  • Moodle: a course management system based on a free open source software package designed to help educators create effective online courses.
  • eduMEET: an open source web-based video-conferencing platform, that provides a self-hosted, secure and trustworthy environment for distance learning (currently in Beta stage)
  • SWAN: a turn-key platform to produce digital notebooks to be created in a simple web interface - with text, code, pictures and video - that can be stored in CERNBox.
  • CERNBox powered by EOS and ownCloud: the Sync and Share storage solution for Science, that allows students and teachers to work and collaborate anytime and anywhere from their mobile devices.

For whom?

The platform and the accompanying tools are available to all European (high) schools and universities, via the national research and education networks (NRENs).

The platform will be available for free during the COVID-19 crisis period.
