Astronomers from the Institute of Astronomy (KU Leuven) operate Mercator telescope from a distance of 3,000 km

Thanks to the technology developed by the Institute of Astronomy and the high-performance Belnet connection, (future) astronomers will be able to continue their research from 3,000 kilometres away during the COVID-19 crisis. Belnet spoke with Prof. Hans Van Winckel, Head of Astronomy at the KU Leuven.

Did you know that the GÉANT network is completing its most important renewal in ten years?

The pan-European research network GÉANT is a fundamental part of Europe's e-Infrastructure, connecting nearly 40 national research and education networks (including Belnet). Launched in 2019, the GN4-3N project aims to support the rapidly growing needs of the European research and education community for the next 15 years.

Belnet completes redesign of its network

As 2020 draws to a close, the final steps will be taken in the redesign of the Belnet network. With this ambitious project, we have succeeded in significantly improving the stability, redundancy and performance of our network. The focus of the final stage has been on increasing and redistributing external capacity. And as for the future, it is definitely set to bring both investments and improvements in the long term.
