The growing digitalisation in Belgium and the recent announcement by Microsoft seemed the perfect opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the transformation towards the Cloud. Indeed, thanks to GÉANT and the OCRE framework agreement, you enjoy numerous advantages.

Microsoft to create three new data centres in Belgium

Last week, Microsoft announced via the media the launch of a project for the creation of three Azure data centres in Belgium to stimulate the digital transformation of the public and private sectors. Although the details of this ambitious project are still unclear, the 3 data centres will be located in the Brussels area. The exact location has not yet been announced.

Speed and local data storage

For many Belgian organisations working with sensitive data, a local cloud anchoring is an important asset to ensure greater data security. In addition, this proximity assures Belgian organisations of lower latency, i.e. a shorter response time of the computing power. These time savings will be necessary for the use of low latency applications, which will be increasingly deployed in the future.

Our commitment to digital transformation

Belnet has been working on this digital transformation with GÉANT for more than a year now in the form of the OCRE Cloud Catalogue. Thanks to the framework agreement, research and education organisations connected to our network can benefit from numerous advantages of hyperscalers such as Rackspace (AWS), Bechtle (Microsoft Azure), Sparkle (Google Cloud), etc.

The local anchoring of the Microsoft datacenters is therefore not a beginning, but a next step to offer even better cloud services to our companies and especially to the R&E sector. Belnet will ensure its presence in these data centres to further facilitate the digital transformation of our communities.
